The Chartreux arose as a religious animal. This beautiful blue cat probably was introduced to France in the 1500s from the Middle East. The Chartreux were bred intensively by Carthusian monks near Paris and probably work.

In the late 1920s, France undertook a strenuous breeding program for the Chartreux cats. Finally, they ended with a stalwart and healthy shorthaired blue cat with an excellent face and a muscular body. Aside from breeding to be raised as a unique breed, they were also introduced into Britain to improve its physique as well as the type and color of its coat in the British Shorthair.

The Chartreux cat almost became extinct during World War II. Thanks to serious efforts by serious breeders, it has staged a comeback as a thriving and healthy breed of today.
